The role of E+A and post-starburst galaxies I. Models and model results

چکیده
Different compositions of galaxy types in the field in comparison to galaxy clusters as described by the morphology-density relation in the local universe is interpreted as a result of transformation processes from lateto early-type galaxies. This interpretation is supported by the Butcher-Oemler effect. We investigate E+A galaxies as an intermediate state between late-type galaxies in low density environments and early-type galaxies in high density environment to constrain the possible transformation processes. For this purpose we model a grid of post-starburst galaxies by inducing a burst and/ or a halting of star formation on the normal evolution of spiral galaxies with our galaxy evolution code GALEV. From our models we find that the common E+A criteria exclude a significant number of post-starburst galaxies and propose that comparing their spectral energy distributions leads to a more sufficient method to investigate post-starbust galaxies. We predict that a higher number of E+A galaxies in the early universe can not be ascribed solely to a higher number of starburst, but is a result of a lower metallicity and a higher burst strength due to more gas content of the galaxies in the early universe. We find that even galaxies with a normal evolution without a starburst have a Hδ-strong phase at early galaxy ages.

The role of E+A and post-starburst galaxies II. Spectral energy distributions and comparison with observations
In a previous paper (Falkenberg, Kotulla & Fritze 2009, astro-ph/0901.1665) we have shown that the classical definition of E+A galaxies excludes a significant number of post-starburst galaxies. We suggested that analysing broad-band spectral energy distributions (SEDs) is a more comprehensive method to select and distinguish poststarburst galaxies than the classical definition of measuring equi...
متن کاملAGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies
We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...
متن کاملAbundance diagnosis of E+A (post-starburst) galaxies
E+A galaxies are characterized as galaxies with strong Balmer absorption lines but without any [O II] or Hα emission lines. The existence of strong Balmer absorption lines means that E+A galaxies have experienced a starburst within the last <1–1.5 Gyr. However, the lack of [O II] or Hα emission lines indicates that E+A galaxies do not have any ongoing star formation. Therefore, E+A galaxies are...
متن کاملThe Evolutionary Sequence of Post-Starburst Galaxies
There are multiple ways in which to select post-starburst galaxies in the literature. In this work, we present a study into how two well-used selection techniques have consequences on observable post-starburst galaxy parameters, such as colour, morphology and environment and how this affects interpretations of their role in the galaxy duty cycle. We identify a master sample of Hδ strong (EWHδ >...
متن کاملThe Ages of Starbursts in Post-starburst Galaxies
We present a new technique for accurately determining the ages of starbursts in post-starburst galaxies. In particular, it uses the strength of the Ca II H + H absorption feature relative to that of Ca II K to separate the e ects of burst strength from burst age in a spectrum comprised of a post-starburst population and an underlying old galaxy population. The technique is based on comparing th...
